Your Google key in 3 minutes
With your own free Google key, your tours translate on YOUR quota — at no cost to you or anyone. It's optional: without a key, your tours use Kune's translator.
Open Google AI Studio
Go to aistudio.google.com/apikey and sign in with your everyday Google account. First time there? Accept Google's terms when prompted.
Create the key
Click “Create API key”. Google generates it instantly — a long string starting with AIza…. Hit the copy icon.
Paste it into Kune
On the web: My account → Profile tab → “Translator with your Google key”. In the app: Guide tab → My tours → “🔑 Your Google API key”. Paste the key, read and tick the consent box, and hit Save. Kune verifies it on the spot.
Your tours now translate with your key
Nothing else to set up: every tour you go live with uses your key from then on. Your profile shows “Key …XXXX active”. Remove it any time to switch back to Kune's translator.
What you should know first
Is it really free?
Yes. Google's free tier asks for no card and sends no bills, and Kune charges nothing for using it. If Google ever offers you paid billing, that's a choice inside your own Google account — Kune can never spend on your behalf.
What does Google get? (read this — it's the deal)
On the free tier, Google may use your tour audio to improve its AI models. Those are your terms with Google, not Kune's. That's why we ask for explicit consent when you save the key — and out of courtesy, tell your group at the start (“translation is by Google AI”). If you don't like the deal, don't add a key: Kune's translator doesn't train on your audio.
Any limits?
Two that matter: with your own key a tour runs up to 3 languages at once (Google's free tier allows few simultaneous sessions), and there's a daily quota — plenty for a normal free tour, but several long tours in one day could exhaust it mid-tour. For big groups, many languages or several daily tours, use Kune's translator.
Is my key safe in Kune?
It's stored encrypted (AES-256) on European Union servers, never shown in full (only its last 4 characters), never sent to visitors, and deleted when you remove it or close your account. It's still YOUR key: don't paste it anywhere else, and if you suspect a leak, delete it at aistudio.google.com/apikey and create a new one.
What if I run out of quota mid-tour?
Translation for that language may stop until the next day. Your group keeps hearing your live voice (it doesn't depend on the key). If it happens, remove your key in your profile and relaunch the tour: it switches back to Kune's translator.
